Stanisław Wyspiański was born in a small room on the first floor in 26 Krupnicza Street in 1869.
The tenement house belonged to the artist’s grandfather – Mateusz Rogowski. The Wyspiański family had to leave it in December 1872 when after the grandfather’s death it was sold. The house passed into the hands of eminent professors from the Jagiellonian University Józef Szujski and Stanisław Tarnowski, and then the painter Józef Mehoffer. The house bought by Mehoffer in 1932 was designed on the pattern of his family property in Jankówka. The artist personally designed and arranged an amazing garden close to the house. In 1996 a museum dedicated to this artist was opened as a branch of the National Museum in Kraków. The exhibition consists of mementoes, paintings and designs of Mehoffer’s works. The reconstructed garden is an extension of the artist’s house-museum exhibition, and at the same time an enclave of greenery in the city centre.
